Gravity: Sandage Homestead, Lake County, Montana

We've long been fascinated by decaying old buildings in rural areas. We have an article about our interest in these old structures, and the project we set for ourselves to build this body of work. With these photos we strive for maximum detail, in an attempt to bring out the beauty in weathered wood, loose nails, peeling paint, rusting metal.

The photos on this page are all of the Sandage Homestead (cabin), said to be the last homestead still on its original site in Lake County, Montana. I've photographed the cabin in all seasons, in both morning and evening light. This has resulted in an image “sequence”, that is, a series of nearly indentical compositions, but made in different seasons and times of day. There are also some individual unique compositions.
